SECTOR Engineering Sales, Inc. was incorporated as an Illinois corporation on October 1, 1978. The founders had worked together in technical sales prior to this. After a survey of their options, they felt the Midwest needed a progressive sales representative that could offer manufacturers in-depth technical knowledge along with the fulfillment of the classic personal sales function.

SECTOR Engineering's sales area encompasses approximately 400,000 square miles and ranges from North Dakota to Southern Illinois and from Iowa to Indiana. We strongly believe that any fractionalization of lines within this area disproportionately increases cost and decreases profits. Our preference is not to deviate from complete territorial coverage.

Major metropolitan locations present little difficulty in sales coverage. Higher expenses and inefficiencies takes place in "lesser known" cities. Despite this degree of difficulty, penetration of "lesser known" accounts is a major ingredient in our business plan. Our customer base is widely dispersed and not easily definable. Conclusions reached vary with the research. However, the following facts are commonly accepted:

  1. The Minneapolis area is densely populated with ultra-high technology. Included in this area are large computer-oriented manufacturers, fall-out and support accounts, test systems houses and a strong medical electronics field.

  2. The Chicago marketplace can be summed-up with the category of "durable goods" manufacturers. Due to its central location, this has become and continues as the origin for much of the average consumers' houseware goods. The Chicago area also includes heavy machinery and major drug manufacturers. After the departure of the American TV and radio producers for offshore locations, some high technology firms have moved in to fill the void.

  3. Indiana is closely tied to the Detroit auto marketplace. General Motors maintains many manufacturing facilities throughout the state. Indiana has several Department of Defense facilities including the Naval Avionics Center, the Naval Weapons Supply Center (Crane), and the Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville.

  4. Milwaukee, is the antithesis of Indiana...it has zero government accounts. Four major, yet unrelated facilities determine this branch's profit. They are Delco, Manufacturers of the GM ignition /exhaust controls; General Electric, Medical Systems Operation; Allen Bradley/Rockwell Industrial Automation products; and The University of Wisconsin.
